Mythological Story:

It is quite undisputed that Lord Shiva and Goddess Maha Kali are considered as the primal forms of Shiva-Shakti. In other words they are bestowed the status of the highest seat of order. Thus was the whole universe functioning, until the highest ego surfaced from the form of Maha Kali.

This form now dominated over Lord Shiva, made him helpless and began to dominate over the whole world. Many divine forms tried their best to convince that this was not good but all reasons failed. The taste of power was had and there was unwillingness to let go of it even if the sufferings spread all around just because of it.

Lord Vishnu had to intervene in this catastrophical situation. He assessed the whole situation and himself tried to reason with Kali. But it was of no use. Lord Vishnu decided that the only way to save the world now was by crushing Kali's ego. The goddess had to be made understood that she is not the ultimate all powerful power of the universe.

It was not an easy task by any means. There was no single form of Shiva available to stand upto Kali. They were all rendered helpless, powerless and enslaved into the superbly dominant enchanting energy. For this reason, the lord thought that this is not possible to be done by any Shiva. You need a Shakti only to do this.

So was created Durga. Another immense dynamic radiant brilliant form of Shakti. This form had a beautiful aura of glorious magnetism and magnificence in it. This was starklingly different than the Kali form that was all crude and brutal form. The Durga form had all grace and yet it showed the highest determination of powers beheld and the sheer strength to carry out any task for the benefit of mankind.

As this was done, the attention was diverted from Kali singularly as there was this another emergence. Then the lord went further ahead and created many other shakti forms simply from parts of these two basic forms. Each of the emerged shakti form was very typical, beautiful, caring, compassionate, powerful, graceful and magnificient.

All this further nullated the attention of all from Maha Kali shakti. In this condition, the powers that were being channeled by Kali were nuetralised and her ego was crushed completely as she realised that she was not the absolute dominate form of the universe. Lord Shiva was released from the bondage inflicted upon him by Kali.

People meanwhile flocked to various places of worship in accordance to their own beheld belief and derived grace from therein. Peace was thus reinstated in world by the creation of such independent forms of strength and power that are respected by all.

Each of the fresh emerged centre of feminine power was thus called as a Shakti Peeth because they had all actually emerged from a single form of Shakti. Everybody was happy with Lord Vishnu for having done this, except goddess Kali. She had been trimmed out on her powers by the lord. Her anger was taken away by the lord that killed the very force that she was chanelling. She was still very respected by all and so were all other shakti forms also who were strength and support for their own Shiva. The goddess Kali never showed it but she carried a deep resentment always inside her towards the lord who had caused her downfall from the seat of absolute singular powerhood besides creating so many other shakti forms of importance.
